LCA Chandler 3 common ways adults get head lice

3 Common Ways Adults Get Head Lice

As adults it always seems to be a shock when we or someone of our age has head lice. We think of lice as the nasty critters that plagued our childhood classrooms not our adulthood. Unfortunately, head lice don’t see age and can affect adults just as much as children.

Adults do have a few advantages though when fighting off lice infestations. They tend to be more hygienic and aware of the threat at hand making it easier to for adults to stay diligent and take steps to avoiding lice. Here are 3 common ways adults get head lice so you can be aware and avoid them in the future:

1. Direct Contact

Direct head to head contact is the most common way head lice spread. Lice cannot jump or fly but instead crawl, so when our heads are in close contact it is easiest for the lice to move to a new host. Think of things like hugging, laying on the floor with friends or kids, or being in a crowded space. Any of these instances where your hair or heads brush together allow the lice to move from one host to the next.

2. Sharing

Sharing is usually caring, except when head lice are involved. Items like scarves, hair accessories, hats, jackets, or hoodies can all help transfer head lice. During times of outbreaks it’s best not to share items and even still, it’s best to bring your own or check items before use. Lice can live up to 24 hours out of human hair in the proper conditions and items like these can easily transfer them from person to person.

3. Our Families

We love our families and especially as the adult in the household it’s our responsibility to take care of them even when they have head lice. Children or other family members with lice is one of the leading causes of outbreaks in the entire family, adults included. To avoid this, it’s best to follow the above rules. Avoid head to head or direct contact until they are clear of lice. Do not share items that they have encountered and be sure to clean thoroughly. You can find proper head lice cleaning tips here. It’s hard not to hold and comfort your loved one in tough times, but lice can be easily taken care of and Lice Clinics of America is here for you!

LCA Chandler dandruff vs. head lice

Dandruff vs. Head Lice

Having an itchy head is never a great feeling but thinking it’s head lice can make it even worse. Often unless dandruff has been a past problem lice is one of the first concerns on our mind when our scalps begin to itch. Thinking you have head lice when it’s really just dandruff can cause a lot of unnecessary stress. That is why it’s important to know the different signs of head lice and dandruff.

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a common condition that causes the skin on the head to flake and in many cases itching. It can be caused by a variety of things from dry skin and not shampooing enough to irritated oily skin and a sensitivity to hair care products. Dandruff only affects those with the condition and is not in any way contagious or transferable.

What are Head Lice?

Head lice are small insects that attach to human hosts’ hair and feed off their blood. They attach to the hair and lay their eggs near the scalp. Unlike common belief a lice infestation is not a sign of poor hygiene or unclean living environment, just that you came in contact with another infested person. Head lice are spread by direct contact from host to host and are transferable from one person to another.

The Difference in Symptoms?

While both dandruff and head lice cause an itchy scalp that’s really where their similarities end. The itching dandruff causes is caused by dry, flakey skin and often the clumps of skin can be felt in the hair. While the itching caused by lice is from the moving bugs. Occasionally lice can be felt moving in the hair. Signs of head lice include itching and rash or redness around the neck, ears, and shoulders. As well as visible lice and nits upon inspection. Dandruff symptoms include white flakes that fall from the hair, oily or dry scalp, and scaly skin on the scalp.

How to Treat Dandruff?

Dandruff can usually be treated very easily. For mild cases it is best to start by simply washing the hair with regular shampoo daily to prevent the build up of oils and cells. If this doesn’t work switch to a medicated dandruff shampoo. There are several different types of dandruff shampoos and it may take awhile to find the one best suited for your hair. Be sure to follow the directions for the shampoo. You can also help by following a healthier diet, getting more sun, and limiting the amount of hair styling products you use.

How to Treat Head Lice?

Head lice may seem a bit more daunting than dandruff, but it can be just as easy to treat. With Lice Clinics of America, we can treat it faster than dandruff! Our signature AirAllé device uses heat to rid lice and nits in just one hour! Our trained technicians are experts in getting rid of lice and our treatment is backed by our lice free guarantee! LCA Chandler post lice treatment itching

Post Lice Treatment Itching

Let’s be real; there is nothing fun about having a case of lice. Similarly, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of relief once your lice treatment is over. But if your head still itches after lice treatment, this could send you right back into the panic and stress you just rid yourself of. Did your lice come back? The experts of Lice Clinics of America – Chandler are here to remind you to stay calm. There are a variety of reasons why your head still itches after lice treatment. Here we will cover the four primary reasons that your head still itches after head lice treatment, including:

  1. Dry Scalp from Treatment
  2. Psychosomatic Itching
  3. Healing Louse Bites
  4. Incomplete Treatment

We will cover each of these possible sources of continued itching and provide you with options for treating your itchy head after lice treatment. If you still have questions or concerns, feel free to visit our website.

Dry Scalp from Lice Treatment

One of the most common sources of your head still itching after lice treatment is from a dry or irritated scalp from treatment. All over-the-counter lice treatments contain a variety of irritants – from chemicals to salt-based compounds – that cause irritation and drying on the scalp.

However, we at Remedy’s strongly advise you avoid these treatments due to the harmful effects of these chemicals. Many are considered carcinogenic and unsafe. Children, women who are pregnant or nursing, and people with severe allergies or asthma should avoid use. At LCA we have a range of different at-home lice solutions that are non-toxic and still very effective. If you’ve already used any of the over the counter remedies and your head still itches after treatment, there are a few simple solutions for these issues.

How To Fix It:

Moisturizing & Dandruff Shampoos: If you find that your scalp is dry after treatment, an extremely affordable, long-term treatment is trying out a shampoo and conditioner designed to hydrate the scalp. It’s important to note one thing, however. Dandruff shampoos often contain certain ingredients, which in some people can further irritate the scalp further. This can be an escalated risk for children.

Natural Oils: As a natural remedy to an itchy scalp, explore the variety of oils that can be massaged into the scalp to help moisturize the skin. Some recommendations include coconut oil and argon oil. Both have a variety of uses, are inexpensive, and have minimal side effects.

Deep Conditioning Treatments: There are a variety of deep conditioning treatments on the market, many of which can be purchased at drug stores or beauty supply stores. Look for deep conditioning treatments that nourish the scalp and use all-natural ingredients to avoid further irritation.

Psychosomatic Itching

Have you ever watched a documentary or a video online about insects and instantly felt like you were covered in bugs? Similarly, your skin is probably crawling right now just from reading about lice! Chances are, you’re experiencing psychosomatic itching which many psychologists classify as a panic-stricken condition. Simply put, psychosomatic itching is a manifestation of anxiety and paranoia happening actively on the human body. Psychosomatic itching can be a frustrating experience that you just cannot wait to get rid of, luckily there are some strategies to address it.

How to Fix It:

Since psychosomatic itching is literally a phenomenon in your head and not on your head, it can be difficult to treat. Since psychosomatic itching is based in anxiety, we recommend the same approaches many take at combating anxiety, including:

Grounding Techniques: Many people with anxiety work to focus on other feelings in their body using all five senses. Take time to focus on things around you that you are feeling, smelling, tasting, seeing and hearing. By distracting yourself with these other senses, you can train your mind to avoid the psychosomatic itching.

Self-Awareness: Take a second to recognize that this feeling is likely all in your head. Chances are, if you didn’t start itching until after you thought about lice, then you can know you are okay.

A Quick Lice Check: Of course, you can always ease your mind with a follow-up lice check. Once you can confirm that your lice are gone, your psychosomatic itching should cease instantly.

Healing Louse Bites

Lice are annoying little parasitic insects that get nutrients from human blood. To get the blood, they bite the scalp. Much like mosquito and other insect bites, these bites can cause irritation. Growing up you may have heard you mom always say that the only way to stop the itching is to stop scratching. We all know that’s easier said than done! Mom was absolutely right on this strategy, because itching can cause the louse bite to reopen, potentially get infected, and take longer to heal.

How to Stop Scratching and Fix It:

  • Low-dose Antihistamines
  • Icing the wounds or adding a cold compress to the scalp and or affected areas
  • Use Witch Hazel. Witch Hazel is a natural astringent available at most drug stores and grocery stores. Witch hazel is an all-natural solution that is used for soothing skin, reducing inflammation, and ceasing the urge to itch.

Bad News: You Might Still Have Lice

head lice treatment clinicians

Now it is time to discuss a possible source of the itching that you’ve been dreading, you might still have lice. This harsh reality is an increasingly common issue. Since lice are becoming resistant to most over the counter lice treatments, you could easily still have lice. Many over the counter treatments are no longer effective against today’s super lice. Even if you chose a nit-picking technique or use a heated air treatment, lice reproduce quickly, and missing even a few nits could mean the population re-surges.

How to Fix It:

If your first lice treatment didn’t work and you’re tired of the stress and hassle of head lice, we recommend seeking professional help from the lice removal experts. Lice Clinics of America uses an FDA-cleared heated air treatment to effectively eliminate all lice and eggs, to prevent a re-infestation. Our specially trained professionals know the proper techniques for getting rid of lice without harmful, irritating chemicals. Talking to Other Parents About Head Lice

Head lice is always an uncomfortable topic to discuss, especially amongst adults. When it comes to neighborhood gatherings, PTA meetings, or lunch with the girls, the last thing anyone wants is to bring up the uncomfortable topics. Head lice is one of those topics though that seems to wedge its way into conversation at the most inconvenient times, when it’s too late and an infestation has occurred. As parents, it’s our job to have the tough discussions ahead of time though to prevent this, so how can we talk to our peers to help avoid the head lice situation?

Be Open

Honesty is always the best policy. Be open about your head lice concerns and that you would like to discuss a plan incase of head lice infestation in your neighborhood, friend group, or school system. Explain the need for open communication, if lice appear in someone’s household it’s best to alert others who may have been exposed rather than be ashamed. Head lice is nothing to be ashamed of, as it can happen to anyone and opening these lines of communication can help set the tone for infestations to come. Help others to know they are not alone in this, and it’s something you as parents will get through together.

Be Knowledgeable

Learn your head lice facts. Having some information to bring to the table can help to ease other parents’ minds and prepare their families. Often people are afraid of head lice but knowing how they behave and how to eliminate them effectively will put their mind at ease. Discuss the difference between common myths they’ve heard and the reality of head lice. Dive deeper together by reading some expert blogs or information to prepare yourselves in case the need arises to use the information.

Be Prepared

Come up with a game plan in case of an infestation. Discuss common and effective treatment strategies like Lice Clinics of America’s signature, AirAllé® FDA-cleared medical device. Set up a system for informing each other or those your family had recent contact with of the situation. When a plan has already been set in place, no one will be caught off guard if the need to enact it arises. Find out your school’s head lice policy and incorporate that into your action plan. The more prepared you are the less stressful you’ll be in the case of an infestation.

Be Cordial

Sometimes talking about head lice is still hard and sometimes there are still individuals that just don’t want to talk. We encourage you to still include them in your planning but in a kind and friendly manner. Write a letter or send an email including the information discussed above. Explain your concerns about lice and state facts. Give them all the information they need to be just as prepared as those who took place in the discussion. Send them a step by step of the action plan, as well as, a list of treatment options and a copy of the school lice policy.

Be sure to keep the lines of communication with other parents in your area open. Talking about head lice and having a plan in mind can be one of the best preventatives. Keep yourself informed and prepared for head lice, but remember head lice is never your family’s fault. If parents work together, then you are never in it alone!

LCA Chandler what do head lice love

What do Head Lice Love?

February 14 is a celebrated day of love, Valentine’s Day! We proclaim our love, give gifts, and spend the day immersed in its joy. We find all the little things we love and surround ourselves with them, whether it be a loved one or chocolate. In the same way head lice like to surround themselves with all the things they love!  Lice, like us have their favorite indulgences and love to infest their favorite things.

Head Lice Love

Head lice are fairly simple creatures, they need a head of hair to survive and are not really picky about whose head they infest. Before it was said that lice preferred clean hair, but lately it has been determined lice do not have a preference, lice just love human hair. Lice love a good healthy scalp to feed off of and making our lives miserable. Direct head to head contact is like a bouquet of roses to head lice. Contact allows them easily to crawl and infest a new host. Long flowing hair not kept up or pulled away is like a love letter to lice. They love hair they can easily find their way onto. Head lice don’t care what type of hair, race, gender, or economic status you are they just love that you have hair and a source for them to feed off.

What Lice Don’t Love

It’s pretty clear that lice’s number one love is hair and a source of food, but for most of us our hair is a source of our love. So, what are we to do? You don’t have to cut your hair or do anything drastic to fend off lice. Just keep in mind the things lice don’t love and can’t live without. For example, lice can’t jump or live without a source for very long. Avoid head to head contact and be careful of items worn or touched by an infested person until it is cleaned. Keep long hair up in up-dos to keep it away from lice. In the same way, those with short hair can wear a hat or ball cap. Learn the facts about head lice and check yourself and your family frequently. Lice’s worst nightmare is someone who knows how to handle them before an outbreak. Most importantly, be prepared and stay calm in case of an infestation and know how to treat lice fast and effectively.

Love Yourself, Lose the Lice

If an infestation occurs, it is important to be prepared and stay calm. Head lice is not your fault or anyone else, they just happen. Remember Valentine’s Day should be about the things you love, not the things head lice love. Let Lice Clinics of America get rid of the head lice fast and effortlessly so you can enjoy a day of love and treats. Our signature AirAllé® medical device uses heat and no chemicals to dehydrate lice in one guaranteed treatment. No longer will lice be able to soak up all the love on your special day! Come see us at Lice Clinics of America and get back to the things you love!

LCA Chandler New Year New Super Lice Problem

New Year, New Head Lice

It’s a New Year, a new decade, and a chance to start a new. Every year we get this awesome chance to reset ourselves and revamp ourselves into something different. Unfortunately, head lice have been doing the same over the past decade. They have been revamping themselves and breeding a new strain of head lice that are here to make our lives that much more difficult. They’re called super lice but let me tell you they are not that super!

What are Super Lice?

Super lice are just like any other head lice in sight and appearance, but are becoming increasingly more resistant to conventional treatments. Lice were once simply treated with over the counter permethrin and pyrethrin (insecticide treatments derived from the chrysanthemum flower). However, today 98% of head lice in 48 states have developed a resistance to these treatments. Over the counter treatments are less than 25% effective on these stands of super lice.

How to Tell if You have Super Lice?

Super lice look, act, and feel just like your run of the mill everyday head lice. Symptoms for super lice and head lice are the exact same. These can include:

  • Itchy scalp
  • Red bumps on neck, scalp, or shoulders
  • Feeling of movement in hair and on head
  • Presence of nits and lice

There is no clear way to tell the difference between head lice and resistant lice until treatment is done and super lice survive. This makes it hard to distinguish a bad treatment and resistant lice, so what are you to do?

How to Treat this New Lice Strain?

When DIY lice removal options and OTC lice treatment prescriptions don’t work, what other options are there? That is where Lice Clinics of America comes to the rescue! You can attempt to nit-pick every louse and nit (lice egg) from your hair, but you often risk the chance of missing a few and being infested again in a few days. You could attempt to continually treat over and over, or you could come see us for our guaranteed, lice free treatment!

Lice Clinics of America offers our signature AirAllé® treatment that treats both resistant lice and normal lice. We use heat to dehydrate lice and nits and remove them from your head to guarantee a lice free treatment! We stand behind our service and our trained lice removal professionals, and even offer advice on staying lice free! Our treatments usually take about an hour and allow you to return to school, work, and life as normal with no wait time or interruptions. Don’t let super lice defeat you, let Lice Clinics of America help and keep your New Year super instead!

If you have any questions or need a head lice removal treatment, don’t hesitate to contact us. LCA Chandler holiday head lice prevention

Holidays and Head Lice

The Holidays are a wonderful time of year, the joy in the air and festive gatherings bring people together. It’s the perfect time to gather friends and families from far and near. In the midst of catching up and filling plates though, it is best to remember head lice can be lurking about.

Nearly all head lice cases are spread through direct head to head contact, 97% to be exact. While you should always put enjoying the holidays first, here are some things to help guide you through the holidays lice free:

Holiday Lice Prevention:

  • Avoid head to head contact. When greeting and giving hugs be mindful of your hair and try to avoid direct contact.
  • Wear hair in tight up do styles such as buns and braids. This helps limit the chance of contact and gives lice less hair to attach to.
  • Do not share accessories that come in contact with your head or hair. Things like brushes, pillows, and hair accessories, as well as, outdoor gear like hats, jackets, and hoodies are things that should not be shared.
  • Do occasional lice checks, by combing through wet hair with a fine comb to keep your mind at ease.

Signs of Head Lice

  • Lice like dark, moist places and can most often be found closest to the scalp, behind the ears, and along the neckline.
  • Look for red bumps along the scalp and neck area from lice feeding off the host.
  • An itching sensation from the head lice and bumps is the most common sign. A crawling sensation may also occur.
  • Nits (lice eggs) are usually found attached to the hair about ½ inch from the scalp. They are white to yellow in color and must be forcefully removed from the hair.

Helpful Head Lice Facts

  • Head Lice cannot live more than 24-48 hours without a host and will soon die if they leave one.
  • Lice do not fly or jump unlike many popular myths state. Direct contact is the most common way head lice is spread.
  • The strain of lice we know as ‘head lice’ is not the same found on common household pets and there is no need to worry about giving your pets lice or them giving you head lice.
  • Head lice do not discriminate; anyone can get head lice!

Tips for Choosing a Head Lice Professional

There once was a time when do it yourself lice treatments were worth all the hassle and could really save the day. Our world has advanced though, and along with it so have the head lice and ways of ridding them. The influx of super lice across the world has made DIY options nearly obsolete. What are average Americans supposed to do when faced with getting rid of head lice? Who should they call for help? (We know what you’re thinking, and no it isn’t Ghost Busters!).

The good news is the increase in head lice professionals has grown right along with the increase in these nasty pests! New lice removing technology and experts are like our favorite movie heroes, busting one case of lice at a time. Where the problem can come is finding the right one to take care of your specific needs.

Do They Have the Proper Training?

A true head lice professional should have received proper training and adequate practice in removing lice. You wouldn’t trust an untrained Ghost Buster to take care of a ghost in your home, so why would you trust an untrained professional with a part of your body. At Lice Clinics of America, all of our staff is trained in both nitpicking and the use of our AirAlle device. We ensure that you get the best care and treatment from the top lice professionals.

What Is the Treatment Process?

Just as important as the individual administering the treatment, is the treatment itself. Be sure to investigate what is offered by the service beforehand. Do they offer simple nitpicking only, do they have a special technique, device or formula, or do they perhaps even offer a guarantee? At Lice Clinics of America, we offer all three!

We will check your hair with a simple screening. If lice are found and a treatment is chosen, we will even refund the price of the screening service! Our signature AirAlle device is a one-of-a-kind FDA-cleared device that uses heat, not chemicals to dehydrate and kill lice and nits. Our signature treatment even comes with a 30-day guarantee! Like the Ghost Busters backpack it’s our secret weapon for defeating lice guaranteed!

Is It an Investment In Your Future?

A good head lice company will help you prepare for future outbreaks and educate you on how to prevent head lice. The sign of a truly good lice professional is one you don’t need again unless absolutely necessary. At Lice Clinics of America, we teach our clients how to prepare for future outbreaks and even how to check for lice on their own. We believe it’s our duty to educate our clients on head lice and provide more than just an in and out service.

If you have any questions or need a head lice removal treatment, don’t hesitate to contact us. At Lice Clinics of America – Chandler, which proudly serves Chandler, Gilbert and surrounding areas, we are here to help! Our heated removal process guarantees to remove head lice in 1 quick and safe treatment. Let your kids and family members get back to the things they enjoy! The Not So Scary Facts on Head Lice

It’s that spooky time of year again, Halloween decorations have begun to decorate the stores and houses, and children are busy picking out their costumes. Here at LCA Chandler we are preparing for the fall and the frightened parents.

Head Lice has been known to be one of parents’ worst nightmares when it comes to their children. The itchy scalps and stigmas around lice have made parents tremble in fear for years but we are here to put those fears to rest.

Head lice are surrounded by a swarm of scary myths and rumors. Learning the facts and setting the truth straight can put your fears to rest. Here are some lice facts that make head lice a little less scary:

Not So Scary Lice Facts

  1. Head lice cannot jump or fly like most common rumors would have you believe. The most common way they spread is through direct head to head contact with an infected person.
  2. Lice cannot live more than 24 hours without a host to feed off. While it is still best to be cautious, direct contact is still the most common form in which lice are spread.
  3. Head lice are a parasitic insect, but the specific type of head lice humans get can not be passed on to common household pets. There is no need to worry about your family dog or cat.
  4. Adult lice are small, about the size of a sesame seed, and are often brown, tan, or gray colored. The female louse can lay up 10 eggs (or nits) a day.
  5. Lice do not discriminate based on socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or any other human known factor. They simply are looking for host and will take whatever they can attach to. Anyone can get lice!

Removing the Fear

Head Lice doesn’t have to be scary if you know your facts and know how treat an infestation. The faster and easier you can get rid of the lice, the less scary the situation. LCA Chandler Back to School Lice Prevention

Back To School Head Lice Prevention

Back to school can often mean back to head lice as kiddies and teens gather together in tight spaces, and roll around on play grounds, with their friends after the long summer holiday. School facilities can be a breading ground for head lice with all the close contact and the large number of hosts for them to move through, sending your child back to school can be a nightmare on the head lice front! Lice clinics across the U.S. will soon see their busiest days over the next few months as schools resume, but with the right prevention efforts can help you keep your students lice free and start the new school year off without a hitch!

1. Educate Yourself and Your Family

There are a lot head lice myths out there today but it’s important to know what is and isn’t true and what will and won’t treat lice. One of the biggest lice myths is that they can jump or hop head to head but in fact lice can not jump and crawl from surface to surface. Lice can also only survive a short period without a host but it is still important not to share accessories such as hair brushes, hats, or hoodies in case the lice are still alive. See the link on our page for more common lice myths and facts and be sure to educate yourself with your schools lice policy. It is also important to know what works when removing lice. Be wary of DIY treatments as some can be harmful to your skin and health and always consult a lice expert or doctor for the right treatment. At Lice Clinics of America we use proper lice screenings and our state of the art AirAlle treatment to remove lice using heat and no harmful, harsh chemicals.

2. Check Your Family Frequently

The sooner head lice is found the easier it is to treat, whether you preform self checks or come into a clinic for a professional check. Occasional checks of your family are good way to ensure everything is healthy, but during an outbreak in your area it is recommended to check weekly or even daily depending the outbreaks severity and your family’s proximity to the infestation. Some common signs of head lice include an itchy scalp, redness or rash on the neckline, shoulder, and/or ears, tan or white specks that may resemble dandruff, and the bugs themselves. It is easiest to check hair while it is damp, just after washing, using a comb and bright light. If you are uncertain our technicians are specially trained experts and here to help, they are happy to do a lice screening for you and ensure the best quality care for your family.

3. Keep Hair Up & Out of the Way

Perhaps the best way to avoid lice besides not sharing items is to simply keep hair from coming in contact with the lice. One of the best ways to do this is to keep hair pulled up in a tight and back hairstyle. Styles such as braids and buns offer the best options for those with long hair, pony tails can also be effective but still allow hair to be loose at the ends. For those with short hair covering it with one of your own clean hats is a perfect way to keep your hair out of harms way. When hats can not be worn just be sure to remind children of the importance of boundaries and keeping their head up.
